did you check the cars they were drivin' gunt.....it's a very poor country....although when I was there a few years back it was around 40c a gallon so it's come down since then.... geez....that vid just bought back some pretty harrowing memories....I arrived in Caracas at around 8pm and then had a 2 hour ride to Velencia....the driver met me at the airport and wouldn't let me anywhere near the exit of the airport until he drew the "car" up next to the exit door....I had a security guard with a drawn pistol standing with me until then... got into the car....which was an early 70's yank tank and before we head out the driver crosses himself and kisses a St Christopher medal.....oh shit... we then head out....now ta get from the airport to the city you have to climb this huge mountain and the road is as steep as they come....so we're climbing this road that makes Mt Ousley look level and all the way up there's more and more cars stopped with their bonnets open from overheating....I'm watching our temp. and it's starting to redline....but he won't stop because he tells me "I forgot my pistol"... we get to the top of the mountain and the car is basically cactus....the smell and film of oil is all through and over the car and he then decides we need to get to a petrol station....but the car won't accelerate....so he puts it in angel gear and we start the descent.....well fark me....the trip down was as steep as the trip up...and every now and then the driver would put the ignition on and try to turn the engine over so as to help with the power assisted brakes....not always successfully....we finally get about half way down and there's a petrol station....he pulls over to the side of the petrol station as if to get a drink or something and straight away there's two guys...one on his side and one on mine....pointing shotguns at us through the windows....the driver winds his window down and explains the situation then tells me to stay put while he organises another lift for me.... I then check out the servo....and each lane of pumps has a bloke with a shotty next to it and just inside the door is a bloke with an automatic rifle....they take runners seriously here obviously... it turns out that because it's a Saturday night and the final of the local soccer comp is on....that I can't get another driver till midnight....by this time I'm fucked and I curl up and try to sleep in the back of the car.... finally the new driver arrives and I put me stuff in his car and then head off to Valencia....supposedly a 1 1/2 hour trip that took around an hour....I woke up a couple of times as the tyres were squealing as we took a bend on a precipice....(it really wasn't until a week later when I came back in daylight that I saw how fucken treacherous the road was)......we got to the hotel around 1am and we were once again confronted by blokes with guns who ordered us out of the car and then they went over it with a fine tooth comb because they were expecting the other driver and didn't know the new one.... Venezuela was an interesting place.....beauty pageants are a national sport....and it seemed like no woman ever wore jeans or clothes that weren't two sizes too small for them....camel toe heaven... and mangoes were the best I eva had and around 20c for a bucket of 'em....bought a shitload and had the hotel squeeze me gallons of fresh mango juice....even took 2ltres on the plane to Rio with me....gin and mango juice....awesome....
